Desert is desert is desert, right? Wrong!
Over half of Israel’s land area is desert, but the Negev, Arava, and Judean deserts each have their own unique characteristics.
In Israel, the desert means many things: vast open spaces, sand, cliffs, mountains, makhteshim*, built up communities, Bedouin villages, nature reserves, IDF bases, centers for innovative agricultural R & D, organic farms, and even wineries!
* makhtesh = a dramatic deep, wide valley with steep-sided walls created by a geological process.
